Questie en Afdronk: sociale codes in het openbare lokaal op het Noord- Brabantse platteland in de nieuwe tijd

Summary: Questie en Afdronk: Social codes at the public space in the North-Brabant countryside during the  New Time
Based on process files, this article gives a view on the social interaction at inns in the North-Brabant countryside.  At the centre is the whole of gestures, words, movements etc. that participants used during social interaction. Due to the public nature of the inn such forms of contact got a ritual value: they were social codes. They structured the social interaction in the intense and limited space of the bar. By means of formal signals, inn visitors could rapidly make their relation and intentions towards the others present known. On the inflammable sociability of the New Time social codes were all the more necessary. A culture of male honour and competition, a certain degree of neurosis and the specific inn surroundings ensured many conflicts and abundant use of violence. However, even the many inn brawls which arose this way were ritually organized. A fixed pattern led from provocation, to fights and finally to a reconciliation drink. Thanks to this informal system of conflict control a deadly outcome (destabilizing in an already precarious pre-modern society) could be avoided as much as possible. The few times it didn’t can be considered exceptional.

Douanier Cyriel De Vuyst, een vergeten amateur-volkskundige (1866-1951)

Summary: Customs officer Cyriel De Vuyst, a forgotten amateur-folklorist (1866-1951)
This customs officer, born at Herzele (East-Flanders), resided for his job in many parts of Belgium. In each he came into contact with the local population. He collected and published very interesting original material and is therefore to be regarded as one of the more important amateur folklorists.  Together with a number of others, he paved the way for the scientific study of orally collected legends, tales, fairy tales and the like.
Some of this material he has published in periodicals such as Oosvlammse Zanten en Biekorf. The majority of his  contributions, however, were published in Het Morgenrood, a little known and rare periodical in which he was a member of the editorial board. In the present paper, the undeserved neglect of De Vuyst is evidenced by a detailed bibliographical survey of his many publications of material collected from spokesmen living as far apart as Maastricht and Tourcoing.

Summary: Toys in Girls’ Hands
“The difference between boys and girls defines the way they play, not the actual objects they are playing with.” This statement of Marianne De Valck dates from 1996. Opinions on boys- and girls’ play weren’t always that broad-minded. Toys, as a mirror of society, display a magnificent image of the evolution of the thinking about girls’ education, emancipation and stereotypical thinking. The Toy Museum explored this material and showed the results in an exhibit ‘Toys in Girls’ Hands’.

Summary: Playing with marbles
While making a study on the play behavior of children in Belgium, the history of one particular game should not be absent. No other game has been played so frequently throughout the 20th century as the shooting with marbles. Jozef Van Balberghe published an interesting booklet on playing with marbles in Mechelen 60 years ago. We took his work as a starting point, since he wrote about the specific aspects of this game in Mechelen, the home town of the Toy Museum. To be able to see the evolution, we compared his study with the inquiry of the  Toy Museum.

Summary: Playing behavior of children in Belgium throughout the 20th century
Toys and games are a cultural phenomenon. They are the result of the evolution of society and at the same time they determine the future of it. Toys and games are the mirror and the pars pro toto  of that society.The Museum undertook a project to inquire the playing behavior of children in Belgium throughout the 20th century.

Speelgoed: een volwaardige erfgoeddrager

Summary: Toys: a unique element of cultural heritage
People who study play often are not taken seriously, as if they don’t have anything else to do, but play all day long. Toys are a serious part of our culture. Toys are much more then a mere object. They are a mirror of our society and tell about our culture. In the Toy Museum in Mechelen toys are not only presented in several ‘traditional’ sections, like dolls or construction toys. The toys tell their story and are regarded as very important witnesses of our material in immaterial culture. Throughout the history of toys, we can learn a lot about social, cultural and economic history. A survey is given of the history of toys in its social and cultural context. On April 23, 2007 the Toy Museum celebrates its 25th anniversary. We noticed that in these 25 years, the study and presentation of toys is take seriously, both by the public and official authorities. For this reason we hope that toys and games will get the appreciation and recognition they deserve as a substantial part of our cultural heritage.

Summary: Research into the eating habits in the 19th and 20th century in Belgium, the Netherlands and Europe.
This essay situates the Dutch and Flemish research into the eating culture in 19e and 20e century Europe. The emphasis lies on the historiographic developments since 1980. The author uses introductions on (colloquium) volumes, book discussions, overview essays and specialized magazines to outline an image of the approaches, methods, sources and debates. The overview starts around 1980, overflows cultural and other inversions of the nineties and ventures itself to outlining recent trends.

(The Pennsylvania State University, Harrisburg) The year of Folklore, and other Dutch lessons in public heritage

Introduction: From an American perspective, the national celebration of “The Year of Folklore” in 2005 in the Netherlands was unusual (Strouken 2005). Although public folklore as a field is well established in the United States with the general intention of promoting as well as documenting folklore activity in the public sphere, the organization of the “Year” by the Nederlands Centrum voor Volkscultuur (Netherlands Center for Folk Culture) appeared more nationalistic, comprehensive, and historical than contemporary American programs, which often tend to be more localistic, with the mission of recovering a lost or hidden sense of “community”, and view themselves as even counter-national or hegemonic (Bronner 1990).
This trans-Atlantic divide raises questions I want to address about the historical contexts for national approaches to folkloristics and ethnology, particularly in the rhetorical appeals to public constituencies. The answers to these  questions, I argue, are central to the guiding conceptualization of the mission of folklorist and ethnologists which often go unstated but drive much of the thinking with as well as about tradition and heritage…..

American folklorists, their vision colored by their social and historical context misperceive the “Year of Folklore” as an exclusionary, romantic nationalistic programming of American public folklore institutions as counter-productive. In my experience, both public heritage trajectories have similar goals of creating understanding, and indeed, tolerance for diverse cultures as well as appreciation for national traditions. But central to the difference is the perceived relation of the public and private realms and its translation into organizational, social, and intellectual structures. In the Netherlands, dichotomy is a social value, with instrumental purpose, while in the United States, it is viewed as a counter-productive, even hegemonic, tool of exclusion.

Het liedboek van Denijs Bauwens uit Kalken (17de Eeuw)

Summary: The ballad book by Denys Bauwens from Kalken (17th C)
MS. 1485 of Ghent University central library has now seventy-three quarto-sized pages left and has suffered extensive water damage. It was written between January 1661 and 1668 by Denys Bauwens, an inhabitant of the East-Flemish Kalken who may have been a miller.
Apart from a few short texts, its main contents are 39 or 40 broadside ballads in Flemish, some copied from then current ballad books in print, a few others from printed broadside ballads by market singers. The repertoire is diverse, including 14 ‘amourous’ songs, some strongly erotic, 6 amusing songs, 3 drinking songs and 3 religious ones as well as single representatives of other types. All songs (as well as the few short texts) are listed in this paper in the order in which they occur in the MS. Of each the incipit, the title, the number of stanzas and lines are given. An alphabetically arranged list of incipits is added. Of a number of the more interesting ones, an extract or the complete text is quoted, thus giving a fairly good idea of the contents and scope of this remarkable collection that has not as yet been given the attention it deserves.
